We were in search of lunch at the San Diego Zoo and were happy to find some tacos at the Front Street Cafe and Cantina.  When in San Diego, it is Mexican food at least once a day for this family.  I get my fix at some local favorites that are also posted on this blog, but whenever I see tacos we try to stop and try them.  Tacos at the Zoo made sense to me as we were starving after walking for hours through the zoo.  I ordered the Carne Asada Tacos ($8.99).  Two soft steak tacos served with Beans and Rice.  The Carne Asada was a bit dry but I liked the Guacamole, Onions and Cilantro.  The Beans and Rice were pretty standard.  The Fish Tacos ($9.29) were not bad but were not something you would rush back for on our next visit to the zoo.  My Daughters Kids Meal ($7.69) was a total rip off with one dried out Chicken Taco, Apple Sauce and a Small Drink.  A Soft Drink here like a Coke will run you over $5 and a small bottled water is $3.19.  Overall these tacos were not that bad and they filled us up for another few hours of walking the San Diego Zoo.

The San Diego Zoo covers almost 100 acres in the heart of downtown area known as Balboa Park.  This has to be one of the best zoo's in the world if not the best.  My advice is to get here early when the park opens and wear really comfortable clothes and shoes.  It takes a lot of walking to see this zoo so don't even think of wearing a dress or high heels if you are a woman.  This is a shorts and t-shirt place where running shoes come in handy.  We strolled the park for hours and were quite exhausted by the end of the day.  Saw some incredible animals and enjoyed a great day in the San Diego sun.

Kahai Street Kitchen is one of my "go to" places for lunch.  They continue to put out great dishes that impress me.  One that caught me by surprise was the Cheese Burger Enchilada ($8.95).  Everyone in my office said it sounded terrible so I was the only one to order it.  Wow....glad I did.  Have actually enjoyed this dish twice now in the last couple of months.  It is huge, filling and delicious.  More like a big beef burrito.  Ragout of Ground Beef, Caramelized Onions, Shredded Cheese, Salsa rolled in Tortilla Wrap with Homemade Enchilada Sauce and topped with Shredded Cheese, Chipotle Aioli and a Sour Creme drizzle.  Served with some really good Mexican Rice and a Salad on the side.  This baby is the bomb.  Great flavor and the onions were oh..so sweet.  Love Kahai Street Kitchen and the Cheese Burger Enchilada!

SPICY BEAN TOSTADAS - DINNER AT HOME

 SPICY BEAN TOSTADAS
DINNER AT HOME

I was craving a good Bean Tostada and decided to make them myself rather than going to one of Hawaii's terrible Mexican Restaurants and paying $10 for a tasteless piece of crap.  Grabbed my favorite Rosarita Spicy Jalapeño Refried Beans from Wall Mart and a bag of Guerrero Tostadas from the Supermarket.  I love to use the Guerrero Tostadas because they are pre-cooked which means I don't need to heat up a bunch of oil to cook corn tortillas.  These really save time and clean up time.  I love Rosarita Spicy Jalapeño Refried Beans right out of the can, but I also like to kick them up a notch by sautéing some onion and jalapeño in a little bit of Olive Oil.  Once the onions and jalapeño are cooked, I add the can of beans and heat it all up.  Spread the bean mixture onto the Tostada and then top with fresh lettuce, cheese and Pico De Gallo.  I always put a bunch of hot sauce on the beans before piling up the veggies.  These Tostadas are better than most Hawaii Mexican Restaurants and a fraction of the cost.
