PUKA DOG - POIPU, HAWAII

THE ORIGINAL PUKA DOG
POIPU, KAUAI

We were able to stop at Puka Dog on the way back to the airport today on Kauai.  This little hot dog shack was made famous when the Travel Channel did a show on the best hot dogs in America.  Today, foodies from all over make their way to Puka Dog to taste some really good hot dogs.  I had the sausage dog with Hot Chili Sauce, Mustard and Relish.  The Puka (hole) Dog is unique because they drill a hole in the bun and insert the dog.  The bun completely surrounds the dog and all of the fixings are spread throughout the bun.  My friend tried the Veggie version and said it was just as good as a beef dog.  At Puka Dog you can choose the sauce and add a variety of condiments that are from Kauai.  Things like coconut, mango and papaya relish.  The buns on this trip were steamed to perfection.  The bun was great.  The dog was good and the fixings were good.  The hot chili sauce really was not hot.  Wish it had more kick.  There is a lot of bun here so the dogs are very filling.  We had a fresh squeezed lemon aid to go with our dogs.  The lemon aid was very sweet.  Way too much sugar for me.  The Puka Dogs will set you back a bit as two dogs and two lemon aids cost a little over $17.
