REGAL BAKERY - DONUTS AND COFFEE

REGAL BAKERY
DONUTS AND COFFEE
HONOLULU,  HAWAII

I am not a big donut eater but if I have a choice where to get a donut it will be Regal Bakery near the Honolulu airport.  This tiny donut hole in the wall serves up some of the best donuts in Hawaii.  I love the Maple and Bacon

ISLAND STYLE MARKETS - KO'OLINA, HAWAII

ISLAND COUNTRY MARKETS
KO'OLINA, HAWAII

Our good friends who had a condo in Ko'Olina always rave about the Deli at the ABC store in Ko'Olina. Since this is the upscale Ko'Olina resort they call this ABC Store the Island Country Markets by ABC Stores.  It is a real nice ABC store with a large selection of premium wines, groceries, souveniers and a great deli that serves breakfast, burgers, soups, salads and sandwiches.  You can grab a pre-made sandwich or wrap or choose your own bread, meats and condiments.  Sandwiches are about $7-8.  Great quality and the perfect place to pick up lunch while in Ko'Olina.

AMA AMA - DISNEY'S AULANI RESORT

AMA AMA
DISNEY'S AULANI RESORT
KO'OLINA RESORT, HAWAII

Our second visit to Ama Ama at Disney's Aulani Resort in Ko'Olina was just as bad as the first visit.  Was happy to see that the main entrees we did not like the first visit are no longer on the menu.  Seems like the menu has been shortened a bit.   We started with a dozen of oysters that the waiter was kind enough to bring from the adjoining bar menu.  The oysters were a bit salty and fishy tasting.  Don't think the table finished the dozen.  I went in on a Bone In Rib Eye dinner for two that was around $100 plus.  Served with platter of four appetizers including ribs, poke and two things that I don't know what are.  Nothing was good on the plate but the ribs.  The entire table picked at these appetizers but did not finish a single one.  Pretty bad. The Bone In Rib Eye was large.  They cut it at the table and split it onto two plates with mashed potatoes and broccolini.  Mashed potatoes were salty but when mixed with the bland beef Rib Eye it woke up the flavor.   The Rack of Lamb was cooked perfectly but the diner said it was "way too salty".  Liked the Chopped Salad.  There was enough for two people.  The highlight of the meal was the warm chocolate dessert with a peanut brittle top.  Everyone loved this.  Ama Ama missed it on food and service.  I have no plans of ever coming back here.  Especially if I am picking up the tab.

Never thought I would ever have a disappointing meal at Roy's.  Every visit for over 15 years has been good.  Real good.  Always amazed with the consistency of the food and service at Roy's up until now.  Roy's Ko'Olina was really lacking on service and flavor this last visit.  Nothing really came together.  Our waiter seemed distant and did not really engage us in any way.  Actually apologized at the end of the meal.  We went with the Roy's Hawaiian Fusion Prix Fixe Menu. $41.50 for a three course meal.  $61.50 with the wine pairing.  The appetizer consisted of two small pieces of delicious Ahi Tuna slightly blackened on the outside and rare in the middle.  Delicious.  The Mongolian Beef Ribs are also really good.  The Spring Roll was really bland.  We ordered the Beet Salad and Mushroom Risotto separately because we enjoyed them the last time at Roy's.  The salad did not disappoint.  Nice slices of beets served with greens, blue cheese and a balsamic dressing.  The Risotto was not like we remembered the last time at Roy's.  I blogged about the Risotto before as being the best tasting Risotto in my life.  I ordered the Macadamia Crusted Fresh Catch which was Swordfish.  Lightly crusted with Hawaii Macadamia nuts.  Fish was good but the sauces which are usually excellent were bland and added nothing to the dish.  My wife had the Honey Mustard Grilled Beef Short Ribs.  Wow....what a huge chuck of beef.  Nice portion.  My wife said it had no taste even with the sauce.  I took several bites and agreed.  The beef was served with Poi.

Not our favorite side dish.  My daughter enjoyed the Kids Meal Salmon that was served with rice and more soy beans.  We left a lot of food on the plates here.  Just was not up to Roy's standards for flavor. Thought the dessert would save the meal.  Roy's Melting Chocolate Souffle.  Problem is it did not melt.   The cake was pretty dry in the middle.  I don't know what happened this night at Roy's.  Really not what we had expected.  Good thing is that we had a gift card to pay most of the check.

LPGA LOTTE CHAMPIONSHIP - KO'OLINA GOLF COURSE

LPGA LOTTE CHAMPIONSHIP
KO'OLINA GOLF COURSE

Blessed to get a couple of VIP Passes to the LPGA Lotte Championship at Ko'Olina.  The passes allowed us access to the players dining room and a special bar area overlooking the 18th hole. Me and my daughter enjoyed breakfast with many of the players the morning of the final round.  I grabbed my eggs and coffee with LPGA players all around me.  I asked one of the Korean players if she liked playing in America.  Her answer with a big smile was "of course, we love it here".  We did not bother the golfers while eating. Just enjoyed the time with my daughter and took it all in.  With my daughter hitting the pool in the afternoon, me and a friend walked the course following the leaders.  We ended up back in the VIP section with about five groups left to finish.  We pulled up two high chairs overlooking the 18th green, ordered a bottle of champagne and enjoyed watching the finish is style.  Click below to see my other blog post on the LPGA Lotte:
