ISLAND OF LANAI - AIRPORT TO THE LODGE AT KOELE

ISLAND OF LANAI
AIRPORT TO THE LODGE AT KOELE

ISLAND OF LANAI
POPULATION 3400
OWNER:  LARRY ELLISON

The Island of Lanai is an unspoiled gem in the Hawaiian Islands.  The Island has served as a cattle ranch and under the leadership of James Dole was once the worlds foremost grower and exporter of pineapples.  Known as the Pineapple Island in its day, Lanai was an agricultural based economy until low cost competitors forced the pineapple production to move overseas.  Now the Island is owned by Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison.  The major employer on the Island is The Four Seasons which operates the Lodge at Koele and Manele Bay hotels.  When you fly into Lanai and stay at the Four Seasons properties, you can relax from the time you land and not worry about transportation.  There is a Four Seasons desk at the baggage claim area in Lanai.  When your bags come out they will tag the bags for your hotel and put you on a shuttle bus.  Travel time to each of the hotels is around 20 minutes.  The twenty seat vans are comfortable, air conditioned and driven by local Lanai residents who are friendly and helpful.  The vans leave the hotels every half hour.  You can go back and forth all day long.  Vans to the airport run every hour.  As you drive down the Pine Tree lined streets you are taken back to the old Hawaii.  There are no traffic lights and the only traffic you will find is the dozen or so hotel vans that go between the hotels, downtown and the airport.  As you enter Lanai City you will see very simple and small homes built of wood with metal roofs.  Most are the same size, shape and style.  There is one gas station, a small grocery store and a hardware store.  Not much else here but the Hotel Lanai and a few small art galleries and a couple of restaurants.  Simply beautiful little city that I hope will never change.

  1. Tour of Island of Lanai is great for tourists. They can fly from a destination, land at the airport then head to lodge at Koele.
