Oahu Country Club is going through some very positive changes. New management has brought a new spirit to Hawaii's oldest Country Club which was founded in 1906. With that year in mind they have opened a new lounge for Members called 1906 - The Lounge at Waolani. Waolani is the second floor fine dining restaurant within the club with dramatic views of the course and downtown Honolulu. Management carved out a section of the restaurant and put in a pretty sweet little bar and lounge area where you can enjoy speciality cocktails, wine and delicious food. A great spot for an after round drink or light dinner as my family enjoyed one Friday evening. We loved the comfortable feel of 1906 and the view and sunset was amazing. Food was delicious but there were a few things that need improvement. The Hamachi Crudu which has become a staple among Hawaii restaurants and Sushi Bars like Doraku and Nobu's was cut really thick and the blood lines were left in the fish giving it a fishy smell and taste. Normally Hamachi is sliced thin with just the silky white fish. The Tomato and Mozzarella Bruschetta was fresh and delicious but included so much raw garlic that it overpowered the taste of the fresh tomatoes. Sometimes less is more when using raw garlic. Fresh Oysters and Cheese Board were excellent. We ordered French Onion Soup and a Caesar Salad from the Waolani Restaurant and the waitress was happy to do it. Soup was delicious but the cheese on top clumped up to a uneatable blog. My Wife loves the Caesar Salad here because it includes a Poached Egg and Avocado. Really good. 1906 is a great addition to the Club so find a Member and get on over there for an afternoon drink and pupu's. Don't think you will be disappointed and maybe you will see me there.
