GRILLED ONO WITH PASTA

ONO WITH PASTA
DINNER AT HOME

Amazed when I hit the market and found super fresh Hawaii Ono for $3.99 per pound.  For comparison, Mahi Mahi was $13.99 per pound.  Imagine a fresh fish dinner for three for under $10 total I thought.  Got home and pulled together a great sauce for this dish.  Sauteed Shallots and Garlic and then deglazed with White Wine.  Added Cream and some Butter and Bam!  One delicious sauce that was perfect for the pasta and Ono.  This was good.  Real good.  Super good.

Really kills me to write a post like this on Sekiya's.  This place has been in business since 1935 and is somewhat of an institution in Kaimuki.  Why I have not eaten here in my 30 plus years in Hawaii when I have lived near the restaurant and have driven by the place a million times was clear today.
Quite possibly some of the worst food we have ever eaten in Hawaii.  I hate to say this but gotta call it like I eat em.  Now let me say this.  The food and staff were terrific.  Always smiling and checking on our water and table.  Everyone seemed to want to make us happy.  This was nice.  The food however really was a turn off and somewhat uneatable.  I am talking bad.  Really bad.  I ordered the Combination Special ($18.95) and chose Beef Teriyaki and Yakitori Chicken.  Served with Miso Soup, Cabbage and Rice.  The Miso Soup was good and included lots of Green Onion which I like.  This was by far the best thing I ate here all day.  The Tsukemono (Cabbage) was bland and tasteless.  Could also see those black dots that often show up on old cabbage.  Don't think they did anything with this cabbage then maybe boil it.  No seasoning or pickling.  The Beef Teriyaki was seriously uneatable.  The Beef tasted dry and old like it was sitting for a day or two.  I could not eat it.  My Daughter ate three small pieces and we left the rest on the table.  The Yakitori Chicken was eatable but very dry and hard.  Again left most on the plate.  This was a $20 meal and I was very disappointed. Heck even the rice was dry and a bit hard.  Left that too.  My Wife ordered the Shrimp Tempura ($15.25).  The Tempura Batter was raw on the back side and the batter was tasteless.  Even the Dipping Sauce lacked any flavor.  The Shrimp was topped with dry noodles which added nothing to the dish.  Dry hard noodles?  We thought that my Daughters Ox Tail Soup ($17.95) would be the saving grace of dishes.  Nope.  We all agreed the most bland and tasteless Ox Tail Soup ever.  The broth had no taste.  The Ox Tail had no taste.  Again left most on the table.  At the end of this meal we all asked ourselves "whats for lunch"?  So disappointing and really one of the worst meals ever in Hawaii.  Hurts me to say this but true.

SASHIMI AND SALAD

SASHIMI AND SALAD
DINNER AT HOME

Mama wanted Sashimi and Salad for dinner so I did my best not to disappoint her.  First off was super fresh Sashimi that melted in your mouth like butter.  Served with Wasabi/Shoyu dipping sauce and a little Avocado on the side.  Kicked up a Romaine and Spinach Salad with some Grilled Cajun Spiced Shrimp, Bacon, Avocado, Hard Boiled Egg, Swiss and Cheddar Cheese plus some veggies.
Super delicious light dinner that the entire family loved.

HOURS:  Daily 5:30 PM - 9:30 PM

We have always liked Vino's and was surprised that a year or two had passed since we last visited.  Was not disappointed on this visit as both the food and service was good.  Surprising though that I did not like the By the Glass wine selections offered on the menu.  With a Sommelier as the Owner, I thought the wine offering would be better.  We were seated in the bar on this visit around 5:30 pm.  Place was filled on a Saturday night.  We started with the Morel Mushroom Loco Moco ($16) which was topped with an egg.  Not bad.  The Pickled Golden Beets ($15.95) were fresh and delicious.  Loved them.  The Bone Marrow ($16) was what can I say. Its Bone Marrow and so delicious.  Loved the Braised Short Rib Ragu served with it.  An appetizer in itself with the toasted bread. The Grilled Octopus ($16) was a little tough but I liked the Smoked Ham Hock Ragu with White Beans.  Caesar salad ($9.50) was good size so all three of us split it and enjoyed a little each.  By the time we got our entrees, we were all pretty much full and satisfied with the appetizers.  I ordered the Seafood Bolognese ($20.95).  Loved the Pasta and Seafood.  Really good dish that I ended up taking home and finishing the next night.  Would definitely order this again.  My Daughter enjoyed the Bolognese Pasta ($20.95) and my Wife liked the Whole Crispy Branzino ($25.95).  Overall the pricing here is good for Honolulu restaurants.  We have paid much more for less quality and taste.
