I have wanted to dine at the Kaimuki Superette since we first saw the building painted.  Love the look and style that it brings to the Kaimuki district of Honolulu.  After going around the block looking for parking we looped around to the front of the building and were lucky to grab one of two or three parking spaces on the left side of the building.  While parking is tough we found the place to be busy on a Saturday afternoon.  We entered to find a brightly lit and cute little restaurant that serves a small selection of sandwiches and a few salads.  I asked the gal behind the counter what she would recommend as nothing on the menu really interested me.  She quickly pointed to the Porchetta and explained that it was served open-faced with braised fennel.  Then she pointed to the black board behind her and recommended the Roast Beef Sandwich that was being substituted on this day for the Sloppy Jose which was not available.   I ordered both sandwiches she recommended plus one side dish of Watermelon.  We grabbed two Waialua Sodas ($2.75 each) from the display case and took our number to the seats at the counter that overlooks the front windows.  I had a Root Beer Waialua Soda and my daughter had Pineapple.  Both were refreshing and delicious.  We waited a bit for our food and then it was delivered by one of the girls at the counter.  I dug right into the Roast Beef Sandwich ($9.50) and was immediately disappointed.  The beef tasted like liver and it had a very mushy quality.
Kind of like liver or a pate.  I cut the sandwich in half and was only able to eat a few bites.  I left 3/4 of the sandwich on the plate when we left.  The salad served with the sandwich was fresh but had no taste.  There is a light oil and vinegar dressing but it does not stand up to the bitter greens.  Did not eat my salad either.  The two small pieces of pickle on my plate were very good.  The Porchetta Sandwich ($12) was served open-faced with some braised Fennel and Arugula.  The meat was good but this sandwich needed something else to pull it together.  My daughter ate most of the meat and left the bread, Fennel and Arugula on the plate.  She also did not like the bland salad and left hers on the plate too.  This was a great place to eat for my diet because I did not eat anything.  Really disappointed in the food here and will not be returning anytime soon.  Spent $35 with tip for two sandwiches and two drinks and left hungry and wondering if this place will be here a year or two from now.
