We were told to play Pelican Hill South Course by many people that love the game of golf. The South Course at Pelican Hill has been named one of the 100 Best Courses in America and is really home to many rich and famous people that live around Los Angeles and Orange County. As soon as you drive up you see the money here. The front of the Clubhouse is lined with Maserati's, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes and Rolls Royce automobiles. We pulled up in a Honda and the valet asked if it was a rental. Suffice to say they did not park our car in the front circle for all eyes to see. The entire staff here was very friendly. Everyone welcomed us and said hello. Nice vibe considering we thought everyone would be pretty stuck up at a place like this. Thankfully it was the exact opposite. The staff and other players were all polite and helpful. We started our day at the Caffe. My buddy enjoyed a Breakfast Sandwich and I went for the Breakfast Burrito. My Burrito was pretty tasteless so I ate half and threw the rest away. The Caffe did make a pretty good Bloody Mary though. Asked for it "spicy" and they delivered! You can pick up cocktails, sandwiches and snacks at the Caffe before and during your round. There are also really friendly Beer Cart girls on the course. The carts are well stocked with a variety of beers and a full bar. Prices are a bit high. We ordered four beers and the tab was $40. We took in the South Course at Pelican Hill with big smiles. Just enjoying the scenery and playing some pretty shitty golf. Thank goodness we were not paired with another twosome. I would have been so embarrassed. My game improved on the back nine but still was a struggle. The course is tough. It demands some thought on each hole. There is little room for error off the tee box. Go right or left and you will lose your ball or be in very deep and brutal rough. Our thoughts by the end of the day were that we "should have taken are medicine and hit the ball back in the fairway" rather than going for the green. Time and time again we wasted shots trying to take on the rough. Each time we lost. It is one thing getting the ball onto the greens here. Once you are there get ready for some cursing because your ball will roll like crazy. Some greens are terraced and when you have to hit down hill it is brutal. One bad tap and the ball rolls ten feet past the hole. Three putting here was the norm and it really frustrated me. Would love to take on this course again now that I have made my way through it. Probably could have saved a bunch of strokes if I would have taken the Caddy offered before our round. Who needs a Caddy we thought. Hello.....I do!
