Happy to see that Maile's has added a second location in town at Ward Center. I am a big fan of Maile's in Hawaii Kai and it is our "go to" Thai Restaurant for the family and out of town guests. Whenever we crave Thai Food we think of Maile's. The Ward location is great with plenty of outdoor seating on our warm Hawaii nights. Indoors is modern, clean and comfortable. On this visit Maile and her right hand gal Janel were both in the restaurant training their new staff. These are two of the most amazing woman in the Hawaii food industry. Both have spent a lifetime working in restaurants in fact I met them over 25 years ago when they were in their teens working at Mekong on Beretania and Paesano's in Manoa. Back then and today they are both so sweet, caring, talented and oh so hard working. Love them! We started our meal with the Thai Salad and this was the first time I tried this dish. Wow...flavor was incredible. Loved the dressing. What a great start. The Hamachi Kama was next and again a surprise as you usually see this on Japanese menus. This fish collar is amazing. While the fish is fried, the meat along the bone is moist and delicious. Janel brought out a Special Appetizer Platter for our group of four. It contained Fish Patties, Calamari, Spring Rolls and Chicken Satay. My fave is always Maile's Spring Rolls but I prefer to eat them wrapped in Lettuce with Mint, Cucumber and House Sweet Sauce as offered on the Appetizer Menu. The Calamari was the surprise here. Lightly battered and fried but not chewy.
Perfectly cooked and delicious with a little of Maile's sweet thai sauce. They Yellow Curry with Chicken when placed over Thai Sticky Rice is downright addicting. I could not get enough of this stuff and loved it. The Thai Fried Rice with Shrimp was good but I love Sticky Rice in Thai restaurants so did not eat much of this. The Ong Choi with Beef is one of our families favorite Thai dishes and Maile's does not disappoint. Love this dish with Sticky Rice too plus lots of Thai Chile Sauce for some heat. The Pad Thai Chicken is one of my favorite dishes. I could eat this stuff every single day. Love it. We were surprised by the dessert which Janel brought for the table. A Thai Crepe filled with Chocolate Sauce and served with Ice Cream. Oh my goodness. Heaven!
