DONER SHACK FOOD TRUCK

DONER SHACK FOOD TRUCK
HONOLULU, HAWAII

Enjoyed dinner at the Doner Shack Food Truck which was parked in front of our State Capitol during the Make-A-Wish Rock n' Run.  The Mediterranean Salad ($10) with Lamb was delicious.  Loved the flavor of the Lamb and the Yogurt Garlic Sauce.  Great salad that the entire family liked.  Would definitely order this again.  The Burrito ($9) with Lamb was good but the Tortilla was not good.  Entire family took a few bites and everyone went back to the salad.  I will be looking for this food truck again and will order the Mediterranean Salad with Lamb.

GUN'S N' ROSES IN CONCERT

GUN'S N' ROSES IN CONCERT
ALOHA STADIUM

Loved seeing Axl Rose and Slash back together.  Slash is AMAZING and Axl can still belt out an 80's rock song.  On this night at Aloha Stadium, the band played for an incredible 3.5 hours!

ROTISSERIE CHICKEN WITH BRUSSELS SPROUTS

ROTISSERIE CHICKEN WITH BRUSSELS SPROUTS
DINNER AT HOME

We always pick up a Rotisserie Chicken when we visit Costco or Sam's Club.  These $6 birds are not only cheap but also very delicious.  On this evening I prepared some leftover Brussels Sprouts and Squash, Chipotle Mashed Potatoes and served it with the heated Chicken.

SHRIMP TEMPURA TACOS

SHRIMP  TEMPURA TACOS
DINNER AT HOME

Gotta tell ya that these are some of the most delicious tacos I have ever eaten.  Follow my recipe and you will not be disappointed.  Every time we eat these tacos we are in heaven.  Entire family loves them and I cannot stop thinking about them.  So good!  I cook the Tempura Shrimp per the instructions on the box and then prep the sauce and toppings.  I start with the Fish Taco Sauce which is a 50/50 mixture of Plain Yogurt and Mayonnaise with Lime Juice, Salt and Pepper. I make a fresh Pico de Gallo with Tomato, Onion, Jalapeno, Cilantro, Salt and Pepper.  When the Shrimp is ready I heat up Corn Tortillas on a flat grill pan.  I like a little char to the tortillas but not too much.  Spread the White Sauce on the tortilla then place a bed of Cabbage over the sauce.  Top with the Shrimp Tempura, Pico, Cheddar Cheese, fresh Jalapeño, Cilantro and a slice of Avocado.  I also add a little of the Shrimp Dipping Sauce that comes in the box and Hot Sauce.  Guarantee you will love these tacos!

Wow...what a surprise Rangoon was. Did not know Burmese food could be this good.
Really enjoyed lunch here and will be going back again soon.  We started with the Tea Leaf Salad ($14).  This is a very light and refreshing with a lot of nuts. I don't normally like nuts in my salad but somehow they worked here and I ate and enjoyed them.  Perfect salad to start a meal.  Next up was the Mango Salad ($14).  Again delicious.  The fresh Mango was the star here and again there were nuts in the salad but I enjoyed them.  The Coconut Vegetable Curry ($16) was the bomb.  I don't eat a lot of Curry but this will change me.  I would order this dish over and over again.  Perfect over some rice.  The Shrimp and Eggplant ($18) was the only miss.  Way too much oil and lacked flavor.  Would not recommend this dish.  The Kung Pao with Chicken ($15) was excellent.  As good or better than any Chinese Restaurant I have been to in Hawaii.  Would definitely order this again.  This was one of those meals where you sit there and take bites and say "wow, this is good".  Rangoon is "good" and I will be back again very soon.

ANTIPASTO SALAD
DINNER AT HOME

Prepared a dinner with what we had in the refrigerator on this night.  Found some Italian Cold Cuts including Prosciutto, Salami, Coppa and Soppressata.  Cut up some Provolone, Parmesan and Cheddar Cheese and added Carrots, Red Onion, Bell Pepper and Olives.  Also a little Bacon.
Topped with Olive Garden Italian Dressing.  This was a quick and delicious dinner that the entire family liked.

TURKEY SAUSAGE BREAKFAST TACOS

TURKEY SAUSAGE BREAKFAST TACOS
BREAKFAST AT HOME

The morning after a 3 hour Gun's N' Roses Concert at Aloha Stadium had me craving something that could absorb the many ounces of beer I consumed the night before.  Rounded up some Turkey Sausage, Eggs, Onion and Bell Pepper, Mushrooms and sautéed in pan.  Warmed some Corn Tortillas and made Tacos topped with a little Cheddar Cheese, Jalapeño, Cilantro and Hot Sauce.  Hit the spot!

I like Alan Wong's.  It is consistently one of the top rated restaurants in Hawaii and the winner of dozens of awards including Best Restaurant.  Food and service always great but on this visit we left a little unsatisfied.  The Stars of our meal were the Lobster Bisque and Desserts.  Other than that the other dishes were just ok.  Maybe we are tired of the same menu items or maybe our tastes have changed.  Don't know but just was not that great.  We started with "Da Bag" ($15) which is mostly presentation.  The dish arrives at the table in a foil bag and then the waiter opens it letting out a flume of steam. This uncovers Kalua Pork and Clams in a pretty bland broth.  Clams were small and did not have much flavor.  The Chopped Ahi Sashimi with Avocado ($23) is always delicious.  You cannot go wrong ordering this appetizer.  The Big Island Heart of Palm Caeser Salad ($12) was really different with Raw Broccoli and very little lettuce.  Dressing was a hit though with my Wife and Daughter.  The Lobster Bisque ($12) was my favorite part of the meal.  No lobster pieces in the soup but flavor was amazing and very satisfying.  The Oxtail Soup ($12) did not go over well with my Daughter.  She didn't like the overpowering spices and said Zippy's was better.  Think it was Chinese Five Spice.  The Roasted Beet Salad ($15.75) was light, fresh and pretty delicious.  I went for the Seafood Stew ($58) for my entree.  This dish was a huge disappointment because of the overpowering spice mix.  Really took away from the flavor of everything.  The Lobster was small and pretty tasteless.  I picked through the dish trying to find things not covered in the spices.  Ended up eating maybe 1/4 of the plate and then threw in the towel.  Yuck.  My Wife had the Twice Cooked Short Rib ($42) and said it was just "ok".  She didn't finish it.  The Stars of the evening were definitely the desserts.  We were given a delicious Chocolate Cake for our Anniversary and we definitely appreciated this and ate it all.  The Coconut ($14) is probably one of my favorite desserts ever.  I love the presentation of this dish and the flavor.  This is sooo good!  The Crunch Bars ($14) is also a family favorite.  We all love these chocolate bars.
