GLIMPSES OF THE SONY OPEN 2014

GLIMPSES OF THE SONY OPEN
WAIALAE COUNTRY CLUB
HONOLULU, HAWAII

Once again the Sony Open proved to be a great cocktail party and golf event.  Spent a good amount of time on the course and at the Kahala Resort.  When the golf ends you can find many of the fans and players enjoying drinks and dinner at the Kahala.  We spent one day at the Sony going in and out of the Sweet 16 Chalet.  This was a private tent located on the 16th hole.  The tent was air conditioned and had a full bar plus great food prepared by Chef Chai.  Chef Chai made what he called a Naked Shrimp Salad that was out of this world delicious.  His Brazed Short Ribs were good too.  There was also a Vegetarian Curry filled withe fresh vegetables and tofu.  Chef Chai himself was in the tent making sure everything was prepared and served to his high standards.  You can eat inside the tent where there were many televisions showing the golf tournament or outside on a covered lanai overlooking the 16th hole.  We ate inside and then spent some time enjoying the golf outside.  On this day we followed Jason Dufner, Adam Scott and Matt Kucher who were all playing in the same group.  I could not believe this group of golf superstars were together walking down the fairway just a few feet from me.  I ran into Jason Dufner's beautiful wife and she was happy to stop for a photograph.  My friend enjoyed a Shave Ice on the course while I enjoyed a few Michelob Ultras.  We ended the day back at the Kahala where World Surfing Champion Kelly Slater was hanging out for friends.  Kelly was a true gentlemen and list us take a picture with him.  After pupu's outside the bar, we ventured inside and low and behold professional golfer Boo Weakly and his friend were enjoying dinner and drinks at the bar.  I love Boo because of his laid back demeanor and Southern style.   Ended up drinking a bottle of wine and hanging out with Boo for about two hours.  Boo was amazingly honest and funny.  Our Saturday began with breakfast at the Kahala before heading to the course.  We checked out the Pasha tent on the 17th hole.  Nice Sky Box with close up view of the putting action on this little Par 3 that sits directly on the ocean.  From the Sky Box we headed over to the first hole where my friend has an amazing house on the course.  He had a buffet spread that was world class.  From Sashimi to Prime Rib and every other local and ethnic food you can think of, he and his lovely wife had it all in his multi-million dollar estate that is spectacular.  From the private party we ventured back onto the course and hit a few beer stands while following John Daly and Jason Dufner.  Also watched Boo Weakly tee off and he actually did a double take as he walked down the fairway and saw me standing on the side.  "Great wine last night" I yelled.  Boo smiled and said "oh yeah".  The day ended back at the Kahala where we sat oceanside and enjoyed cocktails and pupu's.  Many of the golfers passed by and many enjoyed the beach.  When golfer Jordan Speith walked by I had to say Hi.  I had just met Jordan last week in Kapalua, Maui and he was a gentlemen and posed for pictures with us.  Jordan came in second in Kapalua and pocketed close to $700,000.  Not bad for a 20 year old that just turned pro last year.  Jordan was all smiles and again a gentlemen.  Cannot believe how much class Jordan has for his young age.  This guy is special and will be golfs next superstar.  I asked Jordan what he was going to do with the 700k.  He smiled and said he would put it in the bank.  Then he paused and said he would have to use it to pay for his week at the Kahala.  Place is expensive!
