Not far from the main tourist area of Kailua Kona on the rugged coast of the Big Island sits a little sanctuary called Hokuli'a.  Once you pass the large guard shack that protects this private club you enter into golf heaven.  A place where the ocean is your background and rolling green fairways absorb you into a different world where there are no distractions from your round of golf.  You cannot see hotels, buildings, roads or many homes from this course.  It seems as if you are on your own little golf course with nothing else around.  This is a private club and it feels like it from the time you enter the gate.  We were greeted by a young gal in a golf cart as we approached the pro shop to check in.  She introduced herself and welcomed us to the club as she took our bags and placed them on a golf cart.  As we exited the shop the girl asked us if we would like any refreshments and opened a cooler that was filled with snacks, fruit, water, soda and beer.  It is all complimentary she said so we dug in.  I grabbed an apple, cheese stick and a sweet and salty granola bar.  There was beer in the cooler too but we saved those for later in the day.  After hitting on the driving range we were sweating, tired and hot so we took refuge under a tree and just rested.  The Kona sun on this day was brutal.  I hadn't even hit the first tee box and I was dripping sweat.  Turns out I should have been more rested and in better shape to play this course.  It is tough and challenging.  The course was designed by Jack Nicklaus and is considered one of his signature courses.  The bunkers here seem to guard every green and they arrested me several times.  The course stretches along the coast going downhill and then uphill.  I asked my golf partners if this course was tough or was it just me.  They all said it was "tough".  My round was a bit rocky to start but I calmed down after a visit to that beer basket.  What a beautiful day in the Kona sun.  After our round we hit the club bar that sits above the course.  Wow..what a spectacular and calm place.  Could have sat there for hours sipping on a nice chilled glass of Chardonnay.
