Finally had a chance to try Guava Smoked in Kalihi.  This is a place that people I know have been raving about.  Located in a residential/light commercial section of Kalihi, Guava Smoked serves up lunch only from their little apartment style restaurant that actually has living units directly above it.  Menu is pretty simple with Chicken, Pork, Turkey, Fish along with a Burger and Salad.  I tried the Mixed Plate ($11) with Chicken and Spicy Pork.  The Mixed Plate is served with two scoops of Brown Rice and a small salad with Swiss Inn dressing.  The Swiss Inn was one of East Honolulu's favorite restaurants and it appears that their salad dressing lives on long after the closing of the restaurant.  I did not much care for the dressing.  Was a little bitter.  The Smoked Meats served in the Mixed Plate were a bit dry.  The chicken was like beef jerky.  While I liked the flavor, the dryness of the meat really turned me off.  The Spicy Pork is not spicy at all but it is served with some Chili Sauce that packs a punch.  Pork also was a bit too dry for me.  Again, I liked the flavor.  Did not each much of this lunch.  My friends agreed that their food was also dry but they liked it.  Those who ordered the Butterfish and Salmon said they were delicious as did those who tried the burger.   I'll try Guava Smoked again.
