I have a new ritual before seeing a Broadway play in New York during the winter.  The ritual is visiting the Playwright Tavern which is located just off Times Square and walking distance to the Theatre District.  Visited the Tavern twice and enjoyed both visits.  The staff was always friendly, the prices are fair for the location and the food and drinks are solid.  It was around 8 degrees outside when we hurriedly walked up the stairs to the dining room.  Drinking a cold beer just did not sound good so I tried an Irish Coffee.  Wow…..they put a nice bit of Irish in that coffee.  Tasted great and got me warmed up fast.  I also enjoyed a glass of champagne and was amazed that it was only $8.50.  This is a deal considering you are in Manhattan right off Broadway.  A glass of wine at the Waldorf Astoria was running me $18 for the cheap stuff and up to $60 for a single glass of the good stuff.  On my second visit to the Playwright Tavern I enjoyed a terrific dinner of Shepherd's Pie ($18).  When the dish arrived I said to myself there was no way I would finish all of it.  After one bite that changed as this was the best Shepherd's Pie I have ever eaten.  Granted now I have not eaten Shepherd's Pie that many times, but I did have it in a pub in Hawaii and in London.  This Pie was filled with warm beef and vegetables.  Loved the potatoes on top too.  I finished the entire dish and probably could have enjoyed some more.  Perfect dinner on a super cold evening.  My friend ordered the Corned Beef and Cabbage ($20) and was very disappointed.  The beef was totally dry and had the consistency of rubber and no taste.  He was hungry and was not eating it so I had to try the Corned Beef.  I took a nice piece from his plate and took a bite.  Chewy like rubber.  It was bad.  Despite the dry Corned Beef we enjoyed hanging out at the Playwright prior to seeing a few Broadway shows.
