TEDDY BEAR WORLD - HAWAII
HONOLULU, HAWAII (WAIKIKI)
I did not know that a Teddy Bear World existed in Waikiki. We were walking down the street in front of what used to be Planet Hollywood. Inside the Hollywood themed restaurant that went out of business is now a shrine to all things Teddy Bear. We actually walked past the entrance because it looked like just a Teddy Bear shop. Something told me to go inside. We did and were amazed. The entrance is filled with Teddy Bears that you can purchase. Really did not see how this place could stay in business selling Teddy Bears in prime retail space on Kalakaua Avenue. As we looked around I noticed a sign showing that admission was $15. I was not about to pay $15 to look at Teddy Bears I thought. There is really no explanation or person telling you what is upstairs. We did look up and see a video monitor showing video of people touring the upstairs gallery and saying that it was amazing. I asked the cashier if they had a Kamaaina (local) rate. Yes, she said it is $8 for adults and $4 for your daughter. We paid the $20 and went up the escalator not knowing what to expect. The rest was kind of magical. Display after display of Teddy Bears. This is an amazing and expensive array of Teddy Bears set up in professional displays that cover every aspect of life around the world. We learned that the birth of the Teddy Bear was a nickname for President Theodore Roosevelt. Our 26th President was bear hunting in Mississippi when he came upon a small bear cub and refused to shoot it. A cartoon was drawn of the moment and printed in the Washington Post. The rest is Teddy Bear history. I highly recommend Teddy Bear World to anyone who loves Teddy Bears and even those who don't. At the end of the walking tour there is a small theatre where Elvis Presley takes the stage. Great video and a Bear Elvis sing their way into your heart.
