Sailing on the Viking Sea through the Empires of the Meditteranean was definitely one of the best cruises of our lives. The ten day journey with nine magnificent destinations really opened up our eyes to the beauty and history of Europe. We began our adventure in Venice which by itself was a trip of a lifetime. Then off to Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Greece. The Viking Sea is a beautiful, smaller ship with well... how should I say an "older crowd" of what seamed to be seasoned travelers and cruisers. The ship in many ways is like a Four Seasons Hotel on water. Open spaces are well designed with a touch of class and free of the glitzy decor you see on the larger cruise ships. The feel of the ship is very relaxed with no rushing, crowds or loud venues where music is pounding, whistles are blowing and Cruise Directors are screaming through a loud speaker. Music onboard is contained to a Piano Player, Guitar Player and a Violin/Cello Duo plus some very good singers and performers who put on very high quality shows and productions in the main theatre. Other than that it is pretty much lights off by 10:00PM with very little food or entertainment options. The food aboard the Viking Sea was good but not great. The best food by far is at Manfredi's Italian Restaurant. We enjoyed one of the best steaks of our lives and really good pasta here. Problem was we could not get another reservation for this restaurant during the entire rest of the cruise. Book this one early and often. The Chef's Table which we thought would be the smart choice to book often was terrible. After two terrible meals we never went back. The set menu's were really bad but the wine pairings were good. After eating here we were still hungry. Problem is that there is no food (except room service) served after like 9:00PM. We would eat dinner at the Chef's Table around 8:00PM, not like it and go to the buffet at 9PM. Buffet closed though. Went to bed hungry several nights. Dinners at The Restauant which is the main dining room were pretty good with great service. Cannot say enough about the staff onboard. They were always friendly, professional and called you by name. Top notch! I would highly recommend this Viking cruise if you are a bit older and want a more refined, slower paced and very relaxing experience.
