Wanted to get my Wife out of the house so she would not sit home and think about our dog passing. Decided to try the Beachouse at the Moana as I have not dined here in years. Back in the day I spent a lot of time under the large Banyan Tree enjoying cold beers or a glass of wine. Also would enjoy a cup of coffee here on Sunday mornings when it was just a few blocks from my condo in Waikiki. We would often enjoy the Sunday Champagne Brunch and often be the last ones to leave. Boy...those were the days. Returning back to the Banyan Tree and large lanai brought back these memories and it felt good. I was surprised that they only serve a Tasting Menu for dinner. If I were a guest of the hotel, I would like the option of having just a a Salad, Steak or some fresh fish. Cannot imagine staying here a week and only having the Tasting Menu option night after night. Would make me want to leave the hotel every evening. We opted for the 5 Course menu and for us it was too much food. We were full after the appetizers and really did not want our entrees. Ate a bit of bread to start because the damn Lilikoi Butter was so good. The Lobster Chowder was a nice start. We went with this because we do not really like salads with the bitter Field Greens. I am more of a Romaine and Iceberg Lettuce kind of guy. The Poached Shrimp were pretty basic without much flavor and the Gazpacho didn't do much to make this better. The Kona Lobster Gratin was really good. Liked the bread and Garlic Butter. Charred Spanish Octupus was just ok. Needed a better sauce. The Roasted Beets were delicious and would have been perfect with some greens. I loved the Mango Glazed Lamb Chops. Absolutely delicious but I was so full I barely could eat one of them. The Big Island Kampachi with XO Sauce was pretty good. Sauce was delicious and perfect with the Fried Rice. I liked the Desserts but my Wife was not impressed. This was a lot of food and a nice variety of flavors. We took home the leftovers and really have no plans to return again.
