Made another visit to Morimoto Waikiki with some out of town guests. While my first time guests said they loved it, I was not impressed and probably will not return here unless something changes with the menu. Not saying this place is bad. It is quite good. I'm just a bit burnt out on it as I am with Roy's. We started with Toro Tartare ($28) and Hamachi Tartare ($24). These are unique dishes that are presented in a beautiful bowl of ice. Problem is you really don't get the fresh fish taste like you would with a regular piece of sushi. The fish is mashed to a paste and spread on an easel. You scrape the fish off and then top it with various toppings. Big presentation with small flavor and really does not satisfy. The Tuna Pizza ($19) is the exact opposite. This is a baked flour tortilla topped with fresh Ahi Tuna, onion, jalapeƱo and an Olive and Anchovy Aoili. This is DELICIOUS and should not be missed on a visit to Morimoto. We actually finished two of these little Pizza's. The Yellowtail Pastrami ($18) was good. Fresh Yellowtail with a bit of spice on the ends. The Morimoto Style Poke ($19) to me was a mess. Very little Poke and a lot of Bocconcini, Mozzarella Cheese and other stuff that does not go together. When I order Poke, I want fresh fish and a little sauce. Not a bowl of fruit and vegetables. Would never order this again. The Spicy Crab ($28) is fantastic. Nice pieces of meaty Alaskan King Crab topped with a spicy sauce. Sauce was quite spicy and several people at our table could not eat it. Served with perfectly cooked French Fries with the same hot sauce. The Rock Shrimp ($16) was liked by everyone at the table. Served with a Spicy Sauce and with a Wasabi Aioli. The Calamari Salad ($18) is another winner here. Lightly fried and crispy Calamari with greens and White Miso Aioli. Delicious salad that can be shared by up to four people. The Morimoto Mini Burgers ($18) were a little dry but delicious. Waygu Beef with a little pork fat and pickle. Just needed some ketchup maybe. Served with small salad and those great French Fries. We all ended our meal with a small bowl of Miso Soup ($5). One person said it was the best Miso Soup she had ever tasted. Several others said it was good. Service on this afternoon was good. We enjoyed the restaurant and food. Click links below for previous posts on Morimoto Waikiki:
