United Airlines cancelled my flight out of Edinburgh due to a mechanical failure. I am fine with that but when I arrived downstairs after waiting for four hours in the lounge the United representative told passengers that they would have another flight the following evening. I asked the representative if that meant we were on our own in Edinburgh and she said "yes". Thats it. Find transportation, hotel and by the way your luggage won't be off the plane for a few more hours. People were scrambling all around me, on their cell phones calling United, friends and family. There were young kids and families. What if you are a young kid on a budget and trying to get home. You are in a foreign country, have no British Pounds for a cab, hotel or food and United tells you that "you are on your own". Thought that was terrible. I waited for my bags and called United on my cell phone. After a very long time on the phone I was offered a flight that connected in a city where I would have to stay overnight and then catch a connection the next day. That meant another plane and another day lugging my bag and golf clubs from the airport to a hotel and then back again. I would still have to stay in Edinburgh on this night but to get a connection without overnighting I had to fly out two days from now. This meant finding a hotel in Edinburgh for two nights. I did not know what to do so I Googled Edinburgh hotels near airport. I called the first three closest to the airport and they were booked. I then found one that was less than 10 miles from the airport and got a room. It was the Edinburgh Capital Hotel. After grabbing my bags I caught a cab to the hotel which is situated on a hill pretty much in a residential neighborhood. There is a main street a mile or two down the road where there are shops and restaurants. I was tired when I arrived and just checked in. Cleaned up and headed to the bar for a quick meal. Enjoyed a cold beer and Chicken Nachos while watching a little golf. My golf was turned off midway through my Nachos when five lads from the neighborhood switched the channel to Scottish Rules Football or something like that. It was kind of like Rugby. Not bad to watch but I just wanted to sleep. The next night I went back and there was a large party going on and the bar was filled with families and children. I cruised up to the restaurant which is just steps away and ordered a Ceasar Salad, Steak and Fries. Not a bad meal but at this point all I could think of was getting home to Hawaii. Dinner was a blur and it was raining. Rooms and service here were fine. Front desk staff checked me in quickly and the waitress in the bar gave me some sightseeing suggestions. Room was clean and large.
