I have been enjoying Mexican food in San Diego for a lifetime. San Diego has some of the best Mexican food anywhere in America and usually we are quite pleased. The Old Town Mexican Cafe however was probably the worst Mexican food I have ever eaten in San Diego. We wanted to try the place because of the fresh handmade tortillas that you can watch being made in the front of the entrance. The Tortillas looked a bit thick but good in the window. We we greeted by smiling staff and seated within minutes. This place is large and there are several different dining areas that seem to go on forever. We were seated in the room to the left of the main bar. The room is bright with natural light. The menu is extensive with pretty much everything you could dream up for a Mexican menu. I started with my usual San Diego beginning. A cold Bohemia Beer with Chips and Salsa. Chips were fresh and the Salsa had a bit of heat at the end which we all liked. I ordered up a Shredded Beef Taco which are my favorite. The Taco was large and the tortilla was thick. One bite and I was astonished that this may be one of the worst tacos of my life. The beef was tasteless and the thick tortilla was difficult to eat. I took another bite to make sure it was really that bad and it was. Terrible! My Wife and Daughter shared the Street Taco Plate with Rice and Beans. They tore into those tacos and then stopped saying they had no taste. The meats were dry and bland. I tried a bite of several and agreed. They did however like the Beans and Rice. While dining we saw a dish come out that looked spectacular. I asked the waitress and she said it was the Molcajete. I ordered the smaller size and it came to the table looking like the photo on the menu. Shrimp, Chicken Breast, Steak, Cheese, Cactus, Chilies and Avocado served with warm tortillas and Rice and Beans. The idea here is to take the different proteins and make small burritos with the tortillas, rice and beans. I did so and really did not think it was too good. Again the meats were a bit dried and tasteless. We did not end up eating too much of this and left it on the table. All in all probably one of the worst Mexican meals in my history. Would never return back.
