KENKO-YA JAPANESE RESTAURANT
KANEOHE, HAWAII
I don't get over to the Windward side of the Island that often. Had to do a little business near Windward Mall and my customer recommended that we have lunch at Kenko-Ya at the Kaneohe Bay Shopping Center. The restaurant is clean and well lighted. Service was good but there was very little talk between the customers and waitress. Basically give them your order and the food comes pretty quickly. We started with some sushi. Avocado Roll and Spicy Ahi Roll. They were around $7.50 each. Good fresh sushi. The Spicy Ahi was delicious but not too spicy at all. I ordered the Combination Plate. You can pick two or three items for between $13.95 and $16.95. I went with Beef Teriyaki and Ahi Sashimi. There was a dollar or two up charge to have all Ahi rather than three pieces of Ahi and two pieces of salmon. The Ahi was very fresh. Great quality but it was cut so thick. I like sashimi to be cut a bit thinner. This was like biting into a steak. The Beef Teriyaki was good. I put the sauce on the rice. Served with a nice salad and Miso Soup. The Miso Soup was a bit bland and I could smell some soap from washing in the bowl. My customer enjoyed Chicken Katsu ($13.95). This was a huge portion of Chicken that was cooked to perfection. The Ribeye Steak ($16.95) was a nice portion of steak atop grilled onions on a steaming plate. There was a huge chunk of butter on top of the steak that melted over it like a satin glaze. Looked and smelled delicious. My customer did not say much be devoured the entire plate. I would definitely return to Kenko-Ya. The food is fresh and they do not scrimp on quality ingredients.
