Everyone asks the same question about playing The Wynn Golf Course in Las Vegas. How much is it? Well, a round of golf here will set you back $500 per person and that does not include the Caddy which is another $40-$80 and the Club House Attendants $10-$20. Hey.. and don't forget the Hot Dog and Beer $16. Some water and Gatorade is however provided in your cart. Now that the finances are covered lets ask the second biggest question about The Wynn. Is it worth it? I don't think any round of golf is worth $500. However, this was an "experience" and the "experience" was worth $500. Would I play here again. Hell yes! This is a spectacular course that is in perfect condition. Probably one of the nicest courses I have ever played. The "experience" at The Wynn starts upon arrival at the hotel. We were dropped off by a taxi and the VIP Entrance on the side of the hotel. A bellmen was called and he politely placed our clubs on a cart and asked us to follow him to the course. We were lead through the exclusive tower area where multiple Rolls Royce cars lined the entrance and Louis Vuitton luggage was the norm. There were groups of older men dressed in designer jeans, hip shirts with younger blond woman with enhanced attributes, large rings and flowing hair. I was dressed inappropriately with golf shorts, shirt and University of Hawaii visor. Felt great! Our Bellman lead us through the casino and then past a few restaurants and the pool area. The Wynn Hotel is beautiful I thought. This place has class and I want to stay here. The walk through the hotel was an experience. It is beautiful. Very upscale, bright, clean and vibrant. I will be staying here my next trip to Las Vegas I dreamed. We came to two large doors announcing the entrance to the Golf Club and Pro Shop. We were immediately greeted by an attendant who welcomed us to the club and asked for our name and tee time. We tipped the Bellman who had rolled our clubs through the Wynn and as if by magic our bags disappeared as we were greeted by the Pro Shop attendant. Welcome to The Wynn she said with a big smile. I checked in thinking it could not be $500 on the spot. Maybe $450 or $495. Nope....$500 even. I asked if we could hit the driving range and were told that they did not really have a full driving range. Rather a net area where you could hit balls plus a chipping and putting area. The the gal said something that set me back a bit. She said we could not go to the Locker Room or Practice area for another 30 minutes because they limit the number of players on the course at any given time. O.K. then what do we do stand around in the Pro Shop or hit the adjacent bar/restaurant next to the entrance to the locker room. I bellied up to the bar and was ready to order a drink when another attendant introduced himself and said that we could go ahead and enter the locker room. We were escorted through a large wood door and then were greeted by two more gentlemen who welcomed us to the Club, offered us water and fruit and then showed us into the locker room. The locker room was beautiful. I looked around and saw that my golf shoe bag that was packed with my golf clubs that mysteriously disappeared upon our arrival were now sitting on the counter in front of a television. My shoes were cleaned and shined for the first time ever without even asking! OK...that was worth $10. $490 to go I thought. We were then taken to the practice area where golf balls were set in place near the practice mat. We hit some balls into the net and the feeling of maybe being up too late the night before and perhaps indulging in a little too much vino began to enter my mind. This is The Wynn I thought. Man up and get it together. No excuses for $500. I moved over to the practice chipping area which is like a small driving range where you can chip and hit balls about 100 yards. Very nice set up. After that I practiced in a bunker in front of the putting green. Good thing there was no one on the putting green because I nailed a few out of the bunker that could have taken a head off. With practice completed we were ready to hit the course and meet our Caddy. We went to the first hole and a few minutes later our Caddy arrived with another golfer who would be joining our twosome. I like having a Caddy and most of them have been very helpful and a pleasure to spend a few hours with. The Caddy on this day did not live up to expectations and at times I did not want to talk to him, hear is voice or listen to his stories. Lucky the course took my breath away and absorbed me in the moment.
I could not believe that this beautiful course designed by Tom Fazio was on the Strip in Las Vegas. Right outside the doors of these huge mega casinos lies a green oasis that completely takes you to another world within Sin City. It is beautiful, magical and indeed special. Come to think of it, I would rather dump another $500 into playing The Wynn than losing $500 in the casino. At least out here I have 4-5 hours of sunshine, beautiful scenery and golf. Hopefully if I stay at the Wynn Hotel next time they will extend a discount.
