We wanted to knock La Cumbre off our "Bucket List" of restaurants to try while in San Francisco. This famous and celebrated Taqueria has been serving up quality Mexican food since 1967 and was the first Taqueria in San Francisco. It is the birthplace of the famous "Mission Style" burrito that is now served by chain restaurants throughout the United States. The La Cumbre menu is massive. There is a menu board above the counter where you order, but for the entire selection of dishes you need to grab the take out menu that is near the cash register. The menu includes Appetizers, Soups, Salads, Tortas, Burritos, Tacos, Quesadillas, Seafood, Fajitas and a huge selection of vegetarian dishes. Meat choices include Pollo Asado (Lean Grilled and All Natural Chicken), Carne Asada (Lean Grilled Grass Fed USDA Choice Angus Steak), Pollo En Chili Rojo (Chicken Breast with Herb Sauce), Lengua (Beef Tongue with Red Herb Sauce), Carnitas (Roasted Lean Fresh Pork), Pork Chili Verde (Pork Simmered in Green Tomatillos), Al Pastor (BBQ Pork), Steak Chili Colorado (Choice Angus Steak in Red Herb Sauce and Pollo En Chile Verde (Chicken Breast in Green Tomatillo Sauce). You can also order your burrito Vegetarian with Sautéed Seasoned Vegetables, Tofu, Eggplant or Falafel Patties. You can choose between flour, wheat or spinach tortillas and Whole Pinto, Whole Black or Refried Beans. You can order your Mission Style Burrito in various sizes;
Super Burrito - Meat, Beans, Rice, Salsa, Cheese, Guacamole, Sour Creme, lettuce and tomato ($8.50)
Deluxe Burrito - All above minus the lettuce and tomato ($7.75)
Regular Burrito - Meat, Beans, Rice and Salsa ($6.50)
Petite Burrito - A Smaller version of the Regular ($4.50)
Combo Burrito - Any 2 Meats, Beans, Rice and Salsa ($7.75)
Fajita Burrito - Meat Fajitas, Beans, Rice and Salsa ($7.75)
All Meat - Pick your favorite Meat ($8.00)
Make any Burrito Super with Cheese, Sour Creme, Guacamole and Salsa ($9.95)
After you choose your tortilla, meat and preparation, you can choose between Hot or Mild Green or Red Chile Sauces. I went for the Deluxe Carne Asada Burrito on a flour tortilla with hot red sauce. The burrito was pretty bland to be honest. The meat did not taste like it was seasoned and the beans and rice did not add much to the taste. Thought this was just and o.k. burrito. Would not go out of my way to eat one of these again. We also tried the Baja Style Seafood Taco ($4.25). This was a huge mess that you could not pick up and eat like a taco. Tons of lettuce with a few pieces of lightly breaded fish. Again not much taste.
