Had to visit The Buckhorn Exchange while in Denver. This storied steakhouse dates back to 1893 which makes it the oldest restaurant in Denver. The interior is somewhat of a western and hunting museum with plenty of stuffed animals along the walls. Plenty to see here and worth a visit. Staff was very courteous and friendly. Service was excellent. Food was ok if you like Yak, Ostrich, Elk and Buffalo. Since we do not get this type of food in Hawaii, I decided to "go for it" and tried some unique items like Rattle Snake Dip, Rocky Mountain Oysters (Buffalo Balls), Elk and Buffalo. The Rattle Snake Dip was pretty bland. The snake did not have a distinctive taste and I would not order it again. The Rocky Mountain Oysters were a bit chewy and the Cocktail Sauce and Horseradish sauces really masked any flavor. Flavor again was pretty bland. The House Salad was large and served with a homemade Ranch Dressing. Did not really like all the fruit and dried nuts in the salad.
The Elk and Buffalo Combination Plate was ok. I liked the Elk because it was served with a nice sauce on top that added tons of flavor. The Buffalo was a bit overcooked and chewy even though I ordered in medium rare. My friend enjoyed a huge slice of Buffalo Prime Rib.
