Our first visit to Hog Island Oyster Company in San Francisco was fantastic. We loved the food here. This return visit however missed the mark and I don't think we will be back again.
The menu seemed to be reduced and I did not see the incredible food coming out of the kitchen like I remember from our first visit. Something definitely has changed here.
What we did like is the fresh Oysters and Clam Chowder. The Chowder is light, flavorful and filled with Clams in the shell. The Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Pickled Vegetables sucked. The cheese had such a strong and powerful smell that I could not even take a bite. My Daughter fought through the stench and finished two pieces. Not here favorite. The Pickled Vegetables served with the sandwich were drenched in turmeric. That is all you could taste. Totally ruined the vegetables and made them uneatable. I wanted to call over the Chef and complain. Disgusting. The Steamed Clams with Sausage had a smell and taste that did not seem right. Something definitely ruined this dish and again I wanted to call over the Chef and complain. The Burrata with Heirloom Tomatoes was decent but we had to send the first one back because there was a piece of hair in the Burrata.
