The Peninsula Hotel in Manila, Philippines is probably my favorite hotel in the world. I simply love it here. Could stay in this place for months and never leave. Love hanging out in the lobby and listening to the music played by a live band each evening. To me it is pure heaven. There is something about the feeling and ambiance of the Peninsula that relaxes me. Takes me to a place I rarely feel inside. A place of content and relaxation. Entering the hotel is a bit different know as there is tight security surrounding the hotel which has hosted Presidents, Kings and dignitaries from around the world. The hotel was also the place of a government coup attempt not so many years ago where several military tanks ran through the walls of the beautiful lobby. Cars are checked with precision now before entering the driveway that leads to the entrance. Prior to entering the lobby there are physical and electronic security checks along with drug/bomb sniffing dogs. The process is worth it to protect the employees and guests for sure. When you enter the lobby you enter a world until itself in the heart of Manila. There is usually music playing that fills the room with life and spirit. In the evening you can sit back and listen to your own mini symphony. The band takes requests and they played one of my favorite songs Pacabel Canon in D. Brought me to tears as I sat alone in the lobby one evening. The staff at the Peninsula is top notch with most remembering your last name. I approached the front desk for assistance and the clerk asked how I enjoyed my dinner at a particular restaurant. "How did you know I ate there" I said. She looked at me and said she had just reviewed my reservation. It is like that pretty much all over the hotel. Once an employee encounters you and learns your name they will always address you by it. I like the fact that they know you are a return guest and always thank you for your loyalty. I stayed at the Waldorf Astoria in New York four times and never once did the front desk clerk acknowledge my return. Little things like that make the Pen special. Probably helped me get upgraded to a suite with Club Floor Access which was also really nice.
